When: Saturday, May 11, 2024, 9:00 AM to 9:00 PM
Where: Multiple locations from Sweet Creek to Yachats on the central Oregon coast
Skill level: Beginner to advanced
After purchase, participants will receive more workshop details, including specific locations & meeting details, instructions, and gear to bring.
About This Workshop
The Central Oregon Coast is amazingly diverse with some beautiful and seldom visited waterfalls and coastal views. Springtime is especially magical with wildflowers and vibrant colors. Join the Northwest Aperture team on this very special all-day adventure where we cover a wide variety of photographic techniques and subjects.
This workshop is perfect for both beginning and advanced photographers. We will cover many topics including composition, exposure settings, manual focusing techniques, depth of field, use of circular polarizers and neutral density filters for long exposures during the day, and shutter speed choices for different effects of the water. You will benefit from carefully chosen locations.
There will be hiking/walking at all of the shooting locations. Some optional photo-ops might require a bit of “scrambling” and/or navigating wet and wetter rocky shore areas. All participants will be responsible for their own transportation and meals.
What You Get
Personal attention: this workshop is limited in size to provide individual instruction.
Follow-up instruction: 1-hour Zoom class where we will cover choosing among images, editing them, and any questions.
What to Bring
DSLR or Mirrorless Camera with manual controls for shutter speed, aperture, and ISO
(Or a cell phone with a camera app allowing manual controls)
Lenses: telephoto (24-100mm range) and a wide-angle (16-35mm range) are ideal
Tripod
Remote shutter release (or use your camera’s self-timer)
Filters (optional): we recommend a circular polarizer and neutral-density filters (2 to 10-stop range) for a variety of effects (4- or 6-stop if only one)
Snacks and water
Sturdy walking/hiking shoes/boots
Wind and rain gear (just in case)
Camera settings and controls to become familiar with:
Know how to use Manual mode on your camera and adjust the aperture, shutter speed, and ISO
Know how to activate Bulb mode (for shooting exposures over 30 seconds)
Know how to use the self-timer on your camera (if you don’t have a remote shutter release)
Be familiar with manual focus and changing focus modes
Know how to access the histogram for image playback (if your camera has this feature)
The Fine Print
Weather: conditions at the coast can vary wildly and provide different but equally compelling views and photo-ops. Though this is unlikely to change the plans, if extremely poor weather conditions seem probable, we will communicate with the group about options or alternatives.
Transportation: participants are responsible for their own transportation to, from, and during the workshop. If you wish to coordinate with other participants, you may start a discussion on our Facebook events page.
Lodging: NWA team will be arriving and departing the same day. However, if you prefer overnight lodging, we recommend staying in Yachats. We can provide example venues on request.
Facilities: public restroom availability will vary by location throughout the day. Participants are welcome to break from the group as needed. We plan on lunch and dinner stops (no host).
Waiver and Refunds: participants will be required to sign a waiver at the workshop. Sample waiver and refund policy full terms and conditions here.
