What to Bring & Prepare

Certain equipment is required and participants will need a basic understanding of photography. Be sure to bring:

  • DSLR or Mirrorless Camera with the ability to manually control shutter speed, aperture, and ISO.

  • Wide-aperture lenses (“fast” lenses) are key to nighttime photography. We recommend at least f/2.8 or wider (such as f/2, f/1.4) for this event. For this workshop, having lens focal lengths spanning 15mm to about 50mm range is ideal. Telephoto (such as 70-150mm range) is useful for alternate compositions. (Focal lengths are full-frame equivalent; be sure to convert if using non-full-frame camera.)

  • Tripod is critical.

  • Remote shutter release recommended if you own (you can use the self-timer on your camera if you don’t have one).

  • Location has a $15 parking fee, not included.

  • (Other recommendations provided in participant details packet.)

And be sure to review or that you understand how to properly use:

  • Manual exposure mode on your camera to adjust the aperture, shutter speed, and ISO.

  • Remote shutter release and/or the self-timer feature.

  • Manual focus and select from your camera’s focus modes.

  • Histogram on your camera to validate exposure.
