About This Workshop
The Northwest Aperture team will take you to capture a stunning waterfall in the Gorge in a unique way.
Creative photography takes on many forms. It challenges your photography skills and is a lot of fun! Get out of your comfort zone and learn how to shoot long-exposure images of waterfalls after dark. Create images the eye cannot normally see with artificial light painted on a stunning waterfall. Northwest Aperture has selected some ideal locations for night-time waterfall photography.
In this workshop, Northwest Aperture will show you everything you need to take successful photos of a waterfall after dark (camera setup, exposure settings, composition, and focus).
In the event that the weather forecast for the days leading up to the workshop calls for rain, the workshop will be rescheduled to an alternate date.
What You Get
Personal attention: this workshop is limited in number to provide individual instruction.
On-site instruction: successfully capturing a waterfall scene with the right exposure, focusing techniques, shooting for later blends, and the challenges of shooting after dark.
What to bring—important
Camera with manual controls (required)
Remote shutter release (recommended)
Tripod (required)
Wide angle lens 16-50mm range
Medium telephoto lens 24-120mm range (optional)
Lens cloth (there will be mist coming off the waterfalls)
Extra fully charged camera batteries
Warm clothing
Cell phone
Camera settings and controls to review or set in advance
Know how to display and use the histogram during image review and playback.
Be familiar with Manual mode and adjusting aperture, shutter speed, and ISO.
Know how to enable the self-timer for shooting (especially if not using a remote shutter release).
We advise turning off any in-camera “noise reduction,” such as for long-exposures or high- ISO. (Name of setting or whether your camera has these will vary by brand and model.)
We strongly recommend shooting RAW format for flexibility in post-processing.
The Fine Print
Weather: we will make every effort to check weather forecasts and communicate with participants regarding the forecast for the area. We will communicate with the group via email in the days leading up to the workshop if an alternate date becomes necessary due to the weather.

Facilities: public restrooms may not be available; please plan accordingly.
